For more than a year now, humanity has been facing the challenge of seeking many answers, but questions directly related to its survival. The global pandemic has not only changed the stereotype of life that has been established for years but has required a new attitude and attitude in decision-making at local, regional and sub-regional, national and global levels. The development of new strategies and policies, as well as concrete plans for their implementation, has proved to be a priority.

The application of new approaches related to the protection and preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage inherited from the past (ICH) is also part of this process. Within its competences, the Secretariat for the Implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has developed a series of guidelines that have been discussed and proposed for testing in the member states of the Convention. All of them are aimed at the introduction of new measures aimed at the protection and promotion of the ICH in the conditions of a pandemic situation. Actions aimed at uniting the efforts of the international community in this direction are also being developed.

The specificity of the activities for preservation of the intangible cultural heritage, which aims to protect not only the element itself, but also its bearer – a living person, predisposes to take urgent measures in this direction. The understanding of the convention and the recommendations for its implementation of the “fragile nature” of the ICH had to be repeated and reinforced more than ever in its application. Discussions on this issue and their summary have become an important part of the work of the world community to overcome the effects of the pandemic and to identify new measures related to work in this direction in the future.
